I store my buttons in colour families in a 16 box organiser, you can see the storage here...

Gorgeous coloring Kim!! I store all my buttons in little plastic jars with screw on lids, then all the little jars fit inside a photo storage box marked "Buttons" on my scrappy bookshelf. :) I've tried a number of different ways but this one works best for me!
